Role Overview
The Lathe Foreman is responsible for overseeing the lathe department,
ensuring high-quality part production, optimizing accuracy and
efficiency, and driving company success through effective resource
management and process improvement. This role requires expertise in CNC
lathe operations, strong leadership, and exceptional time management to
meet customer deadlines while maintaining quality standards. The Lathe
Foreman collaborates with shop floor leads, machine shop personnel, and
office staff to ensure timely job completion and fosters a clean,
organized, and productive work environment.
Responsibilities
- Setup and Operation: Set up, operate, and program CNC lathes to
produce high-precision components in accordance with customer
drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret technical drawings to
configure CNC lathes, determine dimensions, select cutting tools,
and set machine speeds and feed rates.
- Programming and Modeling: Utilize computer software (e.g.,
MasterCam) to model cutting paths, program lathes, and fluently use
and edit G & M code programs.

- Quality Assurance: Conduct quality assurance tests and in-process QA
inspections to ensure products meet design specifications,
maintaining tight tolerances.
- Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Troubleshoot and resolve issues
during the manufacturing process, perform basic lathe maintenance
(e.g., cleaning, tool sharpening), and ensure machines are properly
maintained.
- Process Optimization: Adjust lathe cutting paths or settings to
optimize production while maintaining quality, and lead process
improvement, process development, and productivity enhancement
initiatives.
- Resource Management: Manage tool and supply usage, report usage
levels, and identify methods to reduce costs while ensuring
efficient workflow and compliance with production schedules.
- Leadership and Training: Train operators to execute programs
correctly, advise machine shop personnel on manufacturing methods,
and foster effective working relationships with peers, supervisors,
and staff.
- Department Oversight: Monitor manufacturing activities to ensure
correct methods are used, remove roadblocks on orders by
communicating issues to management, and maintain a clean, organized
department.
- Communication and Reporting: Provide daily updates on job statuses,
collaborate with shop floor leads and office personnel to ensure
timely job completion, and advise on corrective actions when
required.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the
supervisor.
