The required personal protective equipment (PPE) to complete practical assessment will be present at the time of the assessment, but candidates are encouraged to bring their own personal protective equipment (PPE) for their own comfort and ease of use.

ABOUT THIS JOB
Position Specific SummaryThe Welder position at the City of Tucson's Department of General Services performs welding and fabrication work to repair, construct, and modify ferrous and non- ferrous metal parts, structures, and equipment using various welding techniques.
Work is performed under the supervision of a Fleet Services Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerforms various welding techniques including Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), and stick welding to fabricate and repair metal structures and equipment components. Forges, tempers, forms, and constructs jigs and fixtures to support equipment and infrastructure needs, and drives to various field locations throughout the city as required.
Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications to determine welding requirements for a project.
Conducts visual inspections of completed welds to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Maintains welding tools and equipment in safe, operable condition by conducting regular inspections, and performing preventive maintenance. Troubleshoots equipment issues and performs repairs to minimize downtime and ensure continuous operation. Maintains inventory of welding supplies and materials to ensure project readiness.
Adheres to safety procedures and protocols to prevent accidents and injuries. Conducts safety inspections of work areas,
equipment, and tools to identify and address potential hazards and participates in training and safety initiatives.
Coordinates with engineers, supervisors, project managers, and other staff to understand project scope and schedules. Communicates progress updates, provides feedback, and contributes to improving efficiency and effectiveness of projects.
Records labor, material, and equipment usage in the asset management system for tracking and reporting. Supports accurate documentation of project costs and resource utilization.
Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
Work schedule may require early morning, late evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Indoor and outdoor work with exposure to physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environments, which includes but not limited to heights, confined spaces, dirt, grime, chemicals, loud noises, and unfavorable odors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Education: High school diploma or equivalentExperience: Three (3) year of directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
License/Certifications: Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License
Preferred Qualifications:Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) Certification
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) Certification
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick Welding) Certification
Certified Fork Lift Operator, with current OSHA compliant certification
Demonstrated experience in stainless steel pipe welding, including proficiency in Heliarc (TIG) welding techniques
