This position is responsible for assisting professional engineer and/or higher level technicians in the performance of construction inspection work.

The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.

The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

40% - Serves on a team of lower-level technicians performing inspections on various phases of work such as:

  • Inspection of earthwork operations and placement of embankments for proper materials and procedures. Monitoring base/sub-base course construction and sampling/testing of materials as required for quality assurance.
  • Inspection of placement of Asphaltic Concrete by contractor for adherence to specification, construction procedures and quality measurements.
  • Inspection of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) Pavement construction. Conducts pre-pave checks for readiness of base. Checks elevations and alignment references for slip-form operations or form placements. Monitors dowel and tie-bar installations at joints. Samples and tests PCC for adherence to specifications. Makes test specimens of concrete for strength testing. Observes surface finishing operations for smoothness and notes defects to contractor for remedial action. Ensures proper curing techniques are utilized. Inspects joint construction and sealing operations.
  • Inspection of drainage structures. Inspects trench excavations and bedding material placement. Observes pipe installation for proper grade, alignment, and construction procedures. Inspects placement of re-steel and concrete for box culverts or minor drainage structures (catch basins). Samples plastic concrete and molds strength specimens for payment purposes. Samples materials for backfill operations and monitors tests for proper density.
  • Inspection of bridge construction projects. Monitors structural pile driving operations for alignment and load bearing. Inspects placement of reinforcing steel and PCC on bridge structural members (footings, columns, bents, decks) for conformance to plans and specifications. Samples and prepares cylinders to test for the strength of concrete material and related payment. Observes placement of girders and/or structural steel for conformance to shop/plan drawings. Inspects incidental construction (railings, sealant, etc.) for completion of structures.

20% - Serves as team member for individual phases of construction depending on the Project Engineer's staff and work schedule. Position may rotate from project to project to oversee same.

15% - May serve as sole inspector on incidental construction related to DOTD operations such as guardrails, pavement markings, erosion control, or traffic signal installations. May be called upon to inspect levee construction or drainage channelization projects. In addition, may be required to inspect pump station construction including structural, mechanical and electrical operations. Position Description SCS will keep this document for six (6) years.

10% - Documents contractor activities and accomplishments on diaries, field books, and reports for the purpose of payment of estimates. Enters construction project data into appropriate computer database or application such as Site Manager. Assists office staff with partial and final estimate documents. Prepares and records material sampling or testing reports. Advises contractor of non-conformance and ensures corrective actions are taken. Reviews plans and proposals prior to construction for errors or omissions.

5% - Acts as survey party chief or a member of a survey crew for the purpose of verifying contractor's survey layout, alignment, and offsets on benchmark elevations. Serves on a team of technicians to gather data for pre-design information, pre- construction quality verification, or forensic study of existing facilities.

5% - Receives training from supervisors and trains subordinate personnel in the proper techniques of inspection. Instructs junior inspectors on record keeping and required documentation of project activities. Attends training seminars or conferences as needed to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge.

5% - May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Engineering Technician 2 - Starting salary is $1120.00/bi-weekly
Engineering Technician 3 - Starting salary is $1282.40/bi-weekly
Engineering Technician 4 - Starting salary is $1468.00/bi-weekly

Compensation: This position is eligible for premium pay for every hour worked:
Engineering Technician 1-4 - $2.00/hour
Engineering Technician 5 - $1.00/hour

Work Schedule: Work hours are 7:45 am - 4:15 pm, Monday-Friday
