The Construction & Maintenance Foreman oversees the maintenance, repair, and construction of public parks, trails, and facilities. Working under the Park Operations Superintendent, this position leads a team of full-time and part-time employees to complete a wide range of construction and maintenance tasks. The Foreman is responsible for project planning, staff supervision, staff evaluations, assist with hiring, and ensuring compliance with city building codes. This role requires strong mechanical, construction, and supervisory skills and the ability to act independently in identifying and addressing mechanical and structural deficiencies.

A Day in the Life:

Project Management and Supervision

  • Oversee and direct construction and maintenance projects, including planning, scheduling, and supervising staff and contractors.
  • Lead the design, installation, modification, and repair of park mechanical equipment and systems, ensuring compliance with modern building codes.
  • Prepare cost estimates, labor, and material projections for maintenance and construction projects.
  • Act as the Park Operations Superintendent in their absence, maintaining continuity of operations.

Construction and Technical Skills

  • Perform and supervise commercial construction and remodeling, including framing, interior trim, and finish work.
  • Conduct all phases of concrete work, including flatwork, stem walls, and foundations.
  • Execute welding and metal fabrication tasks as needed for park structures and amenities.
  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair park amenities such as playgrounds, water features, picnic shelters, signage, and recreational equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including loaders, trucks, trenchers, graders, and backhoes, in support of construction and maintenance activities.

Facility Maintenance

  • Perform regular checks and maintenance on pool equipment, including filters, pumps, motors, chlorinators, and heaters, ensuring proper operation and safety.
  • Manage the inventory of tools and materials, ordering supplies as needed to maintain operational readiness.
  • Coordinate with specialized craftsmen for repairs to building systems, conducting follow-up inspections to ensure quality work.

Safety and Compliance

  • Enforce city building codes during construction and remodeling projects, ensuring all work meets regulatory standards.
  • Schedule and oversee inspections, ensuring a safe work environment for all staff and contractors.
  • Make recommendations for major repairs and capital improvements based on inspections and assessments of facilities and equipment.

Procurement and Budgeting

  • Source and purchase materials from approved vendors according to city policies, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Estimate costs and prepare budgets for construction and maintenance projects based on blueprints and work plans.

What you will need for success:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A minimum of three years of related experience in construction, maintenance, or facilities management.
  • Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) within one year of hire. Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) within one year of hire.
