This position is with the Construction Crew 5.
Why does the job exist?
Performs highway construction field inspections, project documentation, assures quality of material and/or conducts field sampling and testing as needed throughout District Three and ensures State and Federal specification compliance.
How does it get done?
Overseeing contractor's work and testing materials used in construction of highways and bridges in order to help NMDOT ensure that all material placed on projects are within specifications, and to ensure all quantities are corrected in a timely manner. Assists in the training of other inspectors out on the field.
Who are the customers?
The traveling public.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
- Experience conducting highway field inspections and sampling and testing field lab materials for quality assurance.
- Experience with reading and interpreting plans, specifications and contract documents.
- Experience reporting pays quantities in Project Source Books.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this
occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments, interaction with the public.
