The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public while promoting economic development and preserving New Mexico's environment.
The NMDOT Rail Bureau is within the NMDOT Transit and Rail Division, one of the divisions under NMDOT's Modal Programs business unit. The Rail Bureau oversees management of NMDOT's railroad assets, coordinates with railroads on highway projects that have railroad impacts, administers the statewide highway-railroad grade crossing safety program, conducts statewide rail planning, and works with the Federal Railroad Administration to conduct railroad safety investigations statewide on railroads not owned by NMDOT.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists to support the Rail Facilities and Permitting Section by providing expert oversight and management of railroad facilities owned by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). It ensures that these facilities are maintained and operated safely and efficiently.
Additionally, this role facilitates coordination between NMDOT highway projects and railroad companies to ensure seamless project delivery, compliance with regulations, and minimal disruption to rail and road operations.
How does it get done?
-Utilize AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, GIS (ArcGIS), and databases to prepare and review technical documents, including signs, contracts, contract exhibits, letters, and spreadsheets related to highway projects involving railroad coordination.
-Support tasks related to the ownership, management, and maintenance of NMDOT-owned railroad facilities and railroad right-of-way.
-Participate in project scoping, design review meetings, and final inspections statewide to ensure compliance and coordination with railroad operations.
-Monitor and inspect the condition of NMDOT-owned railroad infrastructure and right-of-way to identify maintenance needs and ensure safety standards are met.
-Assist with railroad grade crossing field inventories statewide to maintain accurate records and support safety improvements.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience/education in the following areas:
Detail-oriented and technically skilled professional with experience in engineering support roles, particularly related to railroad facilities and transportation infrastructure.
Possess strong proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS (ArcGIS), Microsoft Office applications, and database management.
This candidate demonstrates excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively coordinate with internal teams, railroad companies, and external stakeholders.
They have a solid understanding of railroad infrastructure, rights-of-way, and related safety regulations, with the ability to conduct thorough inspections and field inventories.
Proactive, able to manage multiple tasks, and committed to supporting safe and efficient transportation projects across New Mexico.
A background in civil engineering technology or a related field, along with relevant experience in transportation or railroad projects, is highly desirable.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required experience.

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
