Equipment Operator II - Street Cleaning - 2nd Shift

This is skilled work operating specialized automotive equipment. Work usually includes servicing and making minor repairs to equipment operated. This person may act as crew leader over a small number of employees to accomplish specific tasks or assignments. A supervisor gives general directions in routine tasks and special instructions when changes are made in established procedures.
Work Days and Hours: Monday - Friday 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM
Bargaining Unit: Service Employee's International (SEIU)
- Operates tractors and trucks with special attached equipment such as power loaders, backhoes, winches, snow plows, and other attachments used for varied maintenance purposes.
- Operates special equipment used in pavement markings.
- Directs and participates in the operation of a hot asphalt plant.
- Operates equipment in performing street or airport maintenance work, such as rollers, oil distributors, loaders, pavement breakers, and screed machine.
- Operates a truck and leads a maintenance crew in maintaining, repairing and cleaning streets and airport surfaces.
- Performs mechanical maintenance and service work on equipment operated.
- Snow Removal
- May act as a backup operator or assistant to an Equipment Operator III.

- Knowledge of the principles of automotive equipment operation
- May require the ability to lead the work of a small number of helpers
- May require knowledge of methods used in making concrete, asphalt and brick repairs; or knowledge of paints, thinners and related supplies
- May require working knowledge of work zone traffic control
- Knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance activities
- Ability to maneuver into riding machines with two foot steep first step, and onto frame or fender as required to perform fluid/filter check daily and other maintenance as needed on vehicular equipment
- Ability to lift and carry up to 90 pounds, or up to 275 pounds with the assistance of another person
- Ability to sense approaching traffic
- Ability to use a jackhammer and a chainsaw safely and effectively
- Ability to maintain balance and tolerate riding heavy equipment over rough terrain for long periods of time
- Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist
- Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances associated with traffic and machine exhaust, open grounds, and construction
- Ability to tolerate equipment and machinery noise Ability to continuously perform tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and vehicular equipment), bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk up to half a mile at a time for most of an eight hour shift.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- One year of experience in the operation of automotive or specialized equipment used in construction or maintenance activities.
- A valid Kansas class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsement within 60 days of hire. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.
- A valid driver's license.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Please note that this position is part of a random drug testing pool, and employees are subject to random drug testing in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
