GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Performs responsible and specialized skilled mechanical work to school system buses and a variety of automotive, construction and specialized equipment. Work includes diagnosing and performing minor and major repairs, performing preventive maintenance, metal fabrication and machine work to repair and fabricate parts and equipment. The employee also sena t es in a lead worker role and provides guidance, advice and coaching to lower level equipment mechanics. This higher level Equipment Mechanic is distinguished by the advanced experience and knowledge requirements of the job and the variety and complexity of work performed, and the accountability that certain routine and recurring tasks are completed. The work requires operation of various test equipment and hand tools in order to support the work activities. The employee also serves as a skilled mechanic performing work independently and without guidance. Work includes completing pertinent maintenance records, ordering parts and advising departmental employees on activities. The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Work is performed under regular supervision. The employee receives assignments and instructions from the supervisor and is evaluated by observation and the quality and quantity of the work performed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Diagnoses highly complex mechanical problems.
  • Participates with and assists other mechanics in all areas of repair and replacement as needed.
  • Tests and inspects completed work of other mechanics to insure compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Performs a variety of highly skilled mechanical repair tasks including working on diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
  • Conducts inventory and replenishes materials and supplies.
  • Tests electrical systems to assure proper functioning.
  • Performs school bus body repair/replacement and preparation and painting.
  • Diagnosis and repairs diesel engines.
  • Removes, replaces and reassembles transmissions; clutches; fuel and fuel lines, oil, and water pumps; generators and other parts of the engine and suspension system including diesel injectors and pumps.
  • Performs work of a Maintenance Mechanic I and II as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in mechanical trade skills. Completion of diesel and/or automotive mechanics preferred. Considerable related experience in repairing commercial vehicles, automobiles, construction, and specialized equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and parts and equipment used in the repair of school buses, automotive cars, trucks, and heavy construction and public safety equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, vacuum, and brake systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions of the class.
  • Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts.
  • Ability to read and understand service manuals and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to operate vehicles safely.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records of work activities and parts.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license, Class A with P/S/N Endorsements.

Possession of a valid North Carolina safety and OBD II Inspection license.

Must obtain

-30 day inspection certification program

-120 day probation period

-Must be 21 yrs. Of age

-CDL endorsements required — P, S, N

-Must obtain CDL license within 30 days

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pound of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving and small parts, using measurement devices, assembly, and fabrication of parts, and to maintain records.
