The Painter III completes expert-level painting projects requiring attention to appearance, function and durability. Works as lead member of a crew assigned to all levels of project, also works independently or with peers. Prepares surfaces for new coating materials, mixing coating materials according to specifications, applies coating materials to a variety of surfaces where appearance as well as surface protection are important, and is responsible for the care and maintenance of the tools and equipment employed in the painter's trade. Inspects complex, large scope or high priority work sites and inspects/audits sites once completed to confirm expectations are met. The Painter III is an expert level position with high level of skill and proficiency in the execution of painting duties and site supervision.

  • Minimum seven to 10 years of commercial/institutional painting, staining and furniture refinishing experience; or the equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Ability to interact successfully with the College community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Expert knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating application methods and techniques, including the skill necessary to meet specifications regarding match, texture, decoration, thickness, and level, on wall surfaces, architectural woodwork, and furniture.
  • Expert knowledge of the use and maintenance of standard surface preparation and painting tools and equipment.
  • Expert knowledge of chemicals to assist with removal of paints, urethanes, varnish, rust, and other difficult conditions that need in-depth preparation for finished product.
  • Expert knowledge of building up, shaping, and levelling surfaces with various patching compounds.
  • Expert knowledge of and requisite skill to obtain finely smoothed surfaces.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
  • Computer skills including basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, smartphones or tablets.
  • Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
  • Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations applicable to the use of ladders, ropes, harnesses, and scaffolds.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.

Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:

Responsibilities

  • Inspects work sites of all sizes and scope to determine procedure, material, tools and methodology needed. After work of junior technicians is completed, inspects/audits to confirm that work order requirements and expectations are met.
  • Requests work orders, orders materials/services required for repairs.
  • Communicates directly and respectfully with building occupants, who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work.
  • Proficient in preparing the surfaces for new finish, removing old finishes when necessary.
  • Proficient in preparing new work, for example plugging holes, cleaning, final sanding.
  • Proficient in repairing surfaces using putty, plaster, joint compound, or other appropriate material.
  • Selects pre-mixed paints/stains including enamels, specialty paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, & shellacs. Creates custom colors including enamels, specialty paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, epoxies. Thins, stirs and mixes coating materials according to specific directions and needs. Matches, tints, tones and blends coating materials. Prepares products per manufacturer's instructions.
  • Uses mechanical mixer for volume blending.
  • Proficient in applying products using appropriate brushes, rollers, spray, or other appropriate method.
  • Proficient in applying products including paints, stains and clear coat products, including using spray equipment to apply paints in the spray booth.
  • Proficient in applying special finish appearances such as simulating wood grain, marble, brick, tile, etc.
  • Meets specifications regarding match, texture, decoration, thickness, and level, on wall surfaces, architectural woodwork, and furniture.
  • Refinishes furniture and architectural woodwork to match existing. Proficient in preserving and restoration of historical assets.
  • Assures the coating finish meets surface protection requirements.
  • Cleans brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and other equipment; safely disposes of used paints and rags.
  • Protects surrounding areas.
  • Uses ladders, scaffold, &/or platform as appropriate in a safe manner.
  • Provides cost estimates; orders supplies and products for the shop and contractors.

  • Works with junior technicians on painting projects, explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions. Allows technicians to perform tasks when qualified.
