King Countys Road Services Division is seeking a journey-level carpenter to join our team. In this dynamic role, youll take on a wide variety of challenging projects and rewarding tasks, from performing bridge repairs and working safely from heights, to maintaining concrete structures, ADA ramps, repairing structural components, and building and installing finish materials, such as cabinets and millwork.

King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public's investment and facilitate safe travel. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

  • Perform Bridge Repairs, properly jack, brace, remove and install heavy timbers.
  • Safely work at heights up to 50+ feet.
  • Maintain concrete and masonry structures, including sidewalks and ADA ramps.
  • Repair structural components of facilities and infrastructure including guardrails, fences, decks, floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs.
  • Maintain and repair roof, wall, ceiling and floor coverings including drywall, roofing, acoustical tiles and siding.
  • Install and repair doors, windows and related hardware, including lock mechanisms, closures, and keying systems.
  • Build, install, repair and maintain finish materials including cabinets, millwork, tile, plastic-laminate, furniture, signs and partitions.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of carpentry hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to the Division's clients (the public, other counties and organizations).
  • Work around moving traffic; perform traffic control and flagging in active work zones.
  • Track and document labor hours and time allocations for each project.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Completion of a verifiable apprenticeship program or two (2) years or more of full-time paid experience as a journey-level carpenter.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely perform work at heights up to 50 feet; Set up work sites to ensure safe working conditions per OSHA and WISHA requirements.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics formulas and construction terminology.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the qualities, grades, uses and adaptability of various woods, wood products & related materials used in all types of carpentry.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment used in the trade including safe use of hand and power tools; such as drills, saws, sanders, routers, welders etc.
  • Skilled in repairing structural elements such as guardrails, fences, decks, walls, ceilings, roofs, and floors.
  • Experience in bridge repair, including jacking, bracing, removing, and installing heavy timbers and structural components.
  • Ability to safely operate ladders, lifts, rigging, barricades, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safety harnesses ensuring jobsite safety and public protection.
  • Familiarity with State and County policies, OSHA regulation and building codes.
  • Proficient in recording and maintaining detailed records of work hours and task assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to effectively contribute to a team that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued; Demonstrates behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working in a public works or government infrastructure environment.
  • Knowledge of King County geographic area.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Have a valid Washington State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one prior to start date.

  • An offer of employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.

  • Must obtain King County's CPR and Flagging Certification during the probationary period of employment. (reworded to this)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Must be able to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 70 pounds.

  • Must be able to perform duties involving physical labor including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing and twisting.

  • Must be able to perform work outdoors and in inclement weather.

PRACTICAL/WRITTEN TEST/INTERVIEWS ALL IN ONE DAY:
Successful candidates will be invited to participate in an in-person written test/practical exam/interview, on the same day the week of July 21, 2025. Only those who pass the written test/practical exam move forward to the interview.

WORK SCHEDULE:
The work schedule will consist of four, ten-hour days in the spring/summer, Monday Thursday, 6:00 am 4:30 pm, and five, eight-hour days in the fall/winter, Monday Friday, 7:00 am 3:30 pm. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay, with prior supervisor approval. Working after-hours, weekends, and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances, such as during inclement weather, and on special projects.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS:
This position has been designated First Responder - Employees who, in the early stages of an incident, are responsible for protecting and preserving life, property, evidence, the environment, and restoring order.
