DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Incumbents in this class perform skilled mechanical
work involving responsibility for safe and efficient operation of complex motor driven construction equipment
used in highway repair, construction and maintenance projects and other public works activities. This class
differs from that of Heavy Equipment Operator due to the more complex nature of equipment operated
requiring greater skill along with increased responsibility for safety of others. Additionally, incumbents are
responsible to make minor repairs and service equipment operated. Incumbents receive specific instructions
from a supervisor and are responsible for the safe and economical operation of their equipment on assigned
tasks. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate staff depending on the project. Does related
work as required.<p>FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of heavy duty
road maintenance or specialized equipment; Excellent hand and eye coordination; Good knowledge of county
geography; Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; Ability to service and
make repairs to assigned equipment; Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate staff on assigned
projects; Ability to read and understand assigned equipment operational and servicing information; Mechanical
aptitude; Willingness to respond to emergencies; Ability to work under adverse weather conditions; Positive,
productive and collaborative work attitude; Effective communication skills; Willingness in equipment
operations and work assignments; Dependability and reliability; Physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience in the operation of highway construction and
maintenance equipment, one of which must have been in the operation of complex heavy equipment such as a
crane, backhoe, bulldozer and related heavy road maintenance equipment.
NOTE: Study in a regionally accredited college or university, BOCES or course of study in Heavy Equipment
Operation registered by New York State may be substituted for one year experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Class B CDL, with air brakes, or higher New York State Drivers license
at time of application. Appropriate class drivers license must be maintained during employment.
