JOB TITLE: SHOP FOREMAN & MECHANIC DATE: 4/23/2025

REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF HIGHWAYS

SALARY: \$43,305 - \$56,580 DOE

CLOSING DATE: Open until filled

SUMMARY

Works as Road & Bridge Mechanic under the direction of the Director and

Assistant Director. Conducts

supervisory, administrative and skilled functions related to planning,

directing, and coordinating the maintenance,

repairs, and rebuilding of county vehicles and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on heavy equipment and

trucks (major overhauls,

transmission rebuilds, rebuild carburetors, auto body painting, etc.).

Performs normal daily maintenance on all equipment (fuel, grease, oil

and fuel service, and other light maintenance

duties).

Operates welding machine and all other shop related tools and equipment

used for equipment repair.

Maintain and update records, related to equipment maintenance and

repair.

Orders and stocks departments mechanical supplies, parts and safety

equipment by interfacing with

vendors, and reviewing specifications, etc.

Mechanic required to furnish basic hand tools.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Operates heavy duty dump trucks (10-Wheel) and pull a pup trailer for

hauling rock and gravel.

Operates a truck to plow snow during the winter months.

Performs general laborer duties including but not limited to,

maintenance and repairs on Gem County roads, bridges,

culverts, and ditches.

Ability to work with asphalt and concrete for the maintenance and repair

of Gem County roads and bridges.

Ability to operate miscellaneous equipment (roller, broom, dura patcher,

tractor mower, loader, backhoe, excavator, and

grader).

Ability to properly load, secure, and transport all types of heavy

equipment, while adhering to all oversized load

regulations, load signage, and permitting.

Traffic Control (flagging and sign maintenance).

Performs other duties as assigned.

Available to work occasional weekends, holidays, and nights as needed.

GEM COUNTY ROAD & BRIDGE DEPARTMENT

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

Oversees the technical aspects of the shop, while department employees

are assisting.

Supervision and training of department employees on normal daily

maintenance, of trucks and equipment (fuel,

grease, oil and fuel service, and other light maintenance duties).

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Five (5) years heavy diesel and gas mechanic experience

One (1) year supervisory experience of individuals performing mechanical

duties

One (1) year of experience on 10 wheel dump truck \~ Minimum

Ability to perform journeyman level mechanical work.

Ability to read and interpret complex service manuals

Ability to diagnose mechanical problems on equipment and trucks.

Skilled in the use of tools employed in the repair and welding of heavy

construction equipment.

Ability to possess a Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) class A with

endorsement N within 6 months of

hire

MUST be able to respond within 30 minutes to the Gem County Road

Departments, Emmett shop

Random U/A drug testing

Must pass background check and U/A test before hire

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Perform manual labor

Operate trucks for long periods of time

Ability to stand for long periods of time

Perform duties in all weather conditions

Must be able to lift, turn, and carry 80lbs
