SENIOR TRANSIT MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is highly skilled work involving the repair and maintenance of diesel coaches and related types of tools and equipment. The work is performed independently by employees in this class and requires superior knowledge of automotive repair methods, particularly those relevant to diesel coaches. General instructions are received from the Director of Transit Maintenance or the Transit Mechanic Supervisor regarding what tasks to perform, but considerable leeway is permitted for planning the details of each assignment. The incumbent may be assigned lead roles over Transit Mechanics and Transit Mechanic Helpers. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Performs tasks in rebuilding or repairing engines, transmissions, chassis and drive train units;

Removes, repairs or replaces clutches, brakes, exhaust systems, shock absorbers, automatic transmissions, cooling systems and ignition systems;

Tunes, adjusts and where necessary, completely overhauls gasoline and diesel engines;

Repairs various equipment, including hydraulic, electrical and air conditioning systems;

Performs body repairs using welding equipment;

May analyze the need for repair, or act as a troubleshooter, in specialized area of maintenance;

Performs preventive maintenance inspections to determine repair needs and reports any major defects to supervisor;

Makes road calls to disables coaches, making repairs if possible and/or returning the coach to the garage.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of standard automotive repair methods, terminology and tools of the trade, particularly as they relate to diesel coaches;

Good knowledge of safety and preventive maintenance inspection practices and procedures relating to diesel coaches;

Working knowledge of laws, regulations, standards and safety practices relative to the maintenance of a diesel coach;

Skill in the use of tools used for the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment (e.g. drill press, wrenches, welders, torches, lathes, valve grinders);

Ability to analyze mechanical and operating problems from test runs, the Coach Operators' written and oral reports and the preventive maintenance sheets;

Ability to work from plans, specifications and rough sketches; Ability to operate a transit coach;

Ability to perform work involving strenuous effort;

Ability to establish and maintain a successful working relationship

with others;

Ability to lift heavy objects; Manual dexterity;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Five years experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment including diesel engines.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate level New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

NOTE: Completion of an approved Automotive Mechanics apprenticeship program education beyond high school at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college, university or technical institute in Automotive Mechanics may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
