SUBSTITUTE MECHANIC

LOCATION:Transportation Office

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:As Needed

REPORTS TO:Transportation Supervisor

SALARY CLASSIFICATION:As Per qualifications and experience

PURPOSE

To Service, maintain, and repair all District Vehicles, and wheeled maintenance equipment as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND MENTAL ABILITY

Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, and District personnel in a positive fashion.

Ability to make repairs, trouble shoot, survey, identify, and prioritize maintenance problems on automotive equipment.

Ability to use hand tools, power tools and automotive shop equipment Ability to operate District vehicles and equipment.

Maintain and interpret maintenance and mileage log.

Knowledge of basic computer keyboarding and software application skills. Ability to perform metal fabrication and welding.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or equivalent

Commercial Drivers Licensed Required (will train)

Automotive/Diesel Mechanic

Demonstrated experience in the maintenance and general repair of cars, light trucks, medium truck, small engines, gasoline and diesel engines.

Self-motivated and Team work focused Pass drug and alcohol testing

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform maintenance and repair of all school vehicles and maintenance equipment

Coordinate maintenance and repair of all school vehicles and maintenance equipment

Operate tools and equipment in vehicle shop

Order and receive parts and supplies

Operate vehicles and equipment

Document maintenance records on school vehicles

Perform welding fabrication handling of heavy objects

OTHER FUNCTIONS

Train school bus drivers in proper mechanical operation of vehicle

Maintain shop area

Remove Snow

Assist Supervisor with inventory tracking

Maintain cleanliness of school vehicles

Participate in District staff development programs

Drive school bus routes as needed

Perform duties as assigned by supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS

Exposure to heat and coldweather extremes

Frequent moderate noise level, occasional high noise level

Ability to handle moderate to heavy objects frequently (20-50 pounds)

Requires strenuous physical exertion and mobility

Lower body strength to stand and walk throughout the workday (walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling) Upper body strength to lift 25 pounds and carry more than 50 feet throughout the workday

Ability to push/pull mobile units of 50 pounds more than 1,000 feet

Ability to stoop, bend over and work from sitting or kneeling positions for 15-20 minutes at a time

Ability to lift loads up to 50 pounds occasionally (such as tires or rims)

Ability to work in confined areas such as under seats and engine compartments ability to handle flammable materials

Exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, mechanical and electrical hazards

Must be available or on-call for emergencies
