Position Summary

Assist assigned plumbers in the installation and repair of plumbing fixtures including pipe and gas systems; assist in all types of plumbing and pipefitting tasks and assist with maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours vocational training in plumbing, or heating and cooling systems; and

One (1) year plumbing or pipefitting experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Use and application of common plumbing materials including valves, pipe, fittings, controls and sprinkler systems
  • Use and application of a variety of common plumbing hand-tools
  • Basic techniques of pipe cutting and threading
  • Basic procedures and terminology used in the plumbing trade
  • Basic mathematical principles
  • Basic preventive maintenance of plumbing and HVAC equipment
  • Operational hazards and standard safety practices

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Principles and procedures of materials procurement
  • Learn basic furnace, boiler, air-conditioning and refrigeration-unit repair methods and procedures
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams and plans
  • Assist with backflow device installation and repair
  • Learn the methods and techniques of soldering, brazing, and minor welding
  • Learn to use journey-level plumbing tools
  • Assist with the repair and/or replace damaged plumbing and plumbing fixtures
  • Assemble and install air, gas, water, and related systems
  • Assist with the repair and installation of pumps
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
