Ready to keep outdoor spaces looking their best through expert mowing and grounds care? Multiple departments are looking for aPower Mower Operator-Grounds Keeper! This position is responsible for operating passenger-type power mowers as a primary duty while caring for, maintaining, and beautifying landscaped areas.

Current Vacancies:

  • There are four (4) vacancies with theDepartment of Parks and Recreation:

  • Two (2) vacancies with the Park Maintenance and Recreation Services Division, District II Branch, located between Middle St. to Aiea High School.

  • Two (2) vacancies with the Park Maintenance and Recreation Services Division, District III Branch, located between Waipahu to Barber's Point.

  • There is one (1) anticipated vacancy with the Department of Environmental Services, Central Shop Branch, which is currently based at Sand Island, but will be moving to Ewa Beach/Kapolei in the near future. This position will service various ENV locations around Oahu.

Duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating passenger-type power mowers to mow park properties and other grassed areas, and performing driver-required maintenance on vehicles up to ton, including hauling equipment and supplies with trailers;
  • Performing groundskeeping tasks such as cleaning, watering, trimming, weeding, sweeping, raking lawn areas, and policing parking lots and facilities while operating and maintaining light power equipment and tools;
  • Making minor repairs, including sprinkler head replacements, plumbing unblocking, and light bulb changes; performing building maintenance such as touch-up painting, adjusting plumbing fixtures, replacing paper supplies, and assisting with graffiti removal;
  • Conducting daily inspections of grounds, facilities, and equipment for hazardous conditions, vandalism, graffiti, break-ins, and theft; correcting or barricading issues and reporting findings to the supervisor;
  • Inspecting trees and shrubbery for maintenance needs such as pruning and signs of damage or disease; informing park users of rules and regulations, verifying permits, reporting infractions, and spraying herbicides under supervisor direction;
  • Cleaning comfort stations, restrooms, and recreation buildings; operating light utility vehicles such as golf carts and riding lawn mowers; performing routine maintenance on power mowers by cleaning, oiling, greasing, and making minor repairs; assisting Building Maintenance Repairer and Trades personnel as needed; and addressing hazardous conditions during inspections; and
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Special Work Requirement:Work schedule is from 6:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., with hours and end times varying depending on the vacancy. May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays based on operational needs. This position will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Some experience and/or training in the repair or operation of passenger-type power mowers or similar motorized equipment.

Key Competencies and Skills Needed:

  • Knowledge of the operation and general maintenance of power mowers.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
  • Ability to learn to care for and maintain lawns and landscaped areas.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and make minor repairs to power mowers.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn and enforce pertinent rules and regulations applicable to the protection of public property and public safety.
  • Ability to follow safety rules and practices; handle weights and loads.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

1.) Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3/automobile), as required.

2.) Obtain and maintain from the City's Health Services, Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) test, prior to appointment.
