EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is the beginning level of automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance work. The work involves responsibility for assisting Equipment Mechanic II's and III's in servicing, maintaining and repairing automotive and heavy equipment. The work is performed under the general direction of higher level mechanics in accordance with established policies and procedures. More independence and responsibility is given to the incumbent as his/her skill level increases. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs preventative maintenance Levels A, B, and C on automobiles, trucks, bulldozers, graders, rollers, backhoes and other Public Work's equipment with proper lubricants as well as replenishes gasoline, oil and water as needed;
Inspects and services batteries;
Checks and lubricates transmissions, differentials and rear axle housings;
Repairs flat tires, mounts tires on wheel rims and inflates to recommended pressure;
Inspects and replaces light bulbs and electrical switches; Assists higher level mechanics with more complex automotive
repair and maintenance activities; May operate motor equipment when assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Working knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and other Public Work's equipment;
Working knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment lubricating methods;
Skill in the use and care of automotive, heavy and Public Work's equipment servicing tools;
Ability to adhere to safety precautions when using potentially harmful equipment, tools and machines;
Ability to determine by inspection of automotive equipment the need for grease, oil, water and gasoline;
Ability to assist in making minor mechanical repairs;
Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions;
Ability to work well with others;
Ability to lift heavy objects using hoists and levers;
Ability to perform activities involving considerable strenuous effort;
Willingness to respond to emergencies and work overtime;

Willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions; Mechanical aptitude;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR BROOME COUNTY DEPARTMENTS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and 1 year experience performing repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, including heavy equipment and diesel engines.
NOTE: Completion of an approved Automotive Mechanic Apprenticeship or education beyond high school in automotive mechanics may be substituted for the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF APPOINTMENT:
1)Possession of the appropriate level Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
2)Possession of New York State Motor Vehicle Inspection Licenses #1 and #2.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (for other locations): One year experience in an automotive repair shop performing repair and maintenance of automotive equipment under the supervision or direction of a journey level automotive mechanic.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT DURING THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD (for other locations): Possession of the appropriate level Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
NOTE (for all): When required by the employer, the incumbent must furnish his/her own tools and toolbox.
