EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving the efficient performance of a variety of automotive, heavy and other Public Works equipment repair. A working knowledge of machinist tasks associated with the mechanical trade is required. General instructions, assistance and training are received from the Equipment Mechanic III or Equipment Service Supervisor with some repairs being performed independently. This position differs from that of Equipment Mechanic I in that the Equipment Mechanic II receives more concentrated training in the repair of heavy equipment. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Receives training in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, diesel engines and peripheral accessories;

Completes moderately difficult repairs on motor equipment such as automobiles, trucks, tractors, sweepers, lawn mowers, power saws and other equipment;

Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings; Installs connecting rods and bearings;

Assists in repairs/overhauls of brake systems, differentials, transmissions, and front and rear axles of heavy equipment; Assists with wheel alignments and in the straightening of frames

and fenders;

Operates machine shop equipment including lathes, welders, grinders and power saws;

Operates the fuel and lubrication truck during field maintenance and performs repair work in the field;

Conducts electrical diagnosis in the repair of suspension systems, steering systems, hydraulic systems and electrical systems;

May operate motor equipment when assigned;

For incumbents of Broome County Departments: Performs New York State inspections as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of standard automotive and heavy equipment repair methods, terminology and tools of the trade;

Working knowledge of the machinist trade;

Skill in the use and care of automotive and heavy equipment servicing tools such as drill presses, wrenches, welders, torches, lathes and valve grinders;

Ability to adhere to safety precautions when using potentially harmful equipment, tools and machines;

Ability to work from plans, specifications, rough sketches and oral instructions;

Ability to lift heavy objects using hoists and levers; Ability to perform work involving strenuous effort; Willingness to respond to emergencies as well as work overtime; Willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions; Mechanical aptitude;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR BROOME COUNTY DEPARTMENTS:

A)Graduation from a regionally accredited college, university or two-year technical school or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's Degree or certificate in automotive technology or mechanics; OR

B)Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of experience assisting with heavy equipment repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty construction and/or snow removal equipment; OR

C)Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years of experience performing repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, including heavy equipment and diesel engines; OR

D)An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A), B) and C) above.

NOTE: Completion of an approved Automotive Mechanic Apprenticeship program or education in automotive mechanics beyond high school at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college, university or technical institute may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT FOR INCUMBENTS OF BROOME COUNTY DEPARTMENTS:

1)Possession of the appropriate level Commercial Driver's License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT WITHIN SIX MONTHS OF APPOINTMENT:

1)Possession of New York State Motor Vehicle Inspection Licenses #1 and #2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (for other locations):

A)Graduation from a regionally accredited college, university or two-year technical school or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's Degree or certificate in automotive technology or mechanics, and one year of experience performing heavy equipment repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty construction and/or snow removal equipment; OR

B)Three years of experience performing heavy equipment repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty construction and/or snow removal equipment; OR

C)An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A) and B) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT (for other locations: Possession of the appropriate level Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

NOTE (for all): When required by the employer, the incumbent must furnish his/her own hand tools and toolbox.
