What You’ll Do
The Welder will perform routine hand-welding on a repetitive and non-repetitive nature on standard and non-standard assemblies. De-burr, grind, and fit components prior to welding. Grind and polish finished elements as required. Block jig or position parts prior to welding. Assist other operators in their work as directed/required.
In This Function You Will
- Perform work from manufacturing information, bills of material, written and/or oral instructions.
- Utilize manufacturing information, determine necessary parts/inventory, jigs/fixtures, and obtain materials from stock areas.
- Complete necessary preparation work such as cutting material, grinding of components, wiping, degreasing, and de-burring.
- Operate TIG welder, MIG welder, spot welders, cutting torch, power grinder, power sanders, hand-tools, bandsaws, drills, temporary fixturing devices, jigs and fixtures, and other metal-fabrication equipment as directed.
- Be responsible for maintenance of equipment such as dressing of welding electrodes, oiling/greasing, machine settings, changing of tooling, and minor adjustments may be necessary. Complete necessary maintenance check sheets and inform Supervisor and / or Maintenance personnel of any problems
- Maintain equipment and perform housekeeping duties as necessary.
- Adheres to all environmental, health, safety rules and regulations, and work instructions including the use of ventilation equipment during welding operation and the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist team in achieving plant and department goals by flexing when needed.
- Assist with on-the-job training and continuous improvement.
- Fosters an environment that promotes FMD’s goals, philosophies, and encourages continuous improvement through participation and teamwork.
- General knowledge of Quality Management System.
Qualifications
Basic (Required):
- High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school.
- Six (6) months of prior welding experience or a technical diploma or certification in welding from an accredited institution
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
Preferred
- 1-3 years’ weld experience in industrial manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of basic shop math and welding symbols.
- Ability to read and understand formal, informal drawings, and/or engineering drawings.
- Experience with structural frames and NAVSEA S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 a plus.
- Experience with sheet metal punching and forming a plus.
Skills
- Ability to read written instructions and comprehend verbal instructions.
- Ability to read and follow standard work.
- Ability to use good judgment and problem-solving skills to make informed decisions.
- Basic computer knowledge of Windows based operating systems and programs.
- Ability to use measuring tape, and variable gauges, such as calipers.
- Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to use a crane once fully trained to lift items
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Repetitive lifting, bending, and squatting is inherent to this position
- Ability to wear required PPE for the role including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoes, and protective arm and hand coverings
