This is skilled work in the operation of heavy duty trucks and in the performance of allied duties. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operating of heavy duty trucks and similar equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sewers and other public works projects. Employees of this class are also responsible for undertaking manual labor tasks incidental to the operation of assigned equipment, such as the loading and unloading of materials and the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled work on; construction and maintenance projects. Employees may also be required to act as lead worker directing unskilled and semi-skilled workers assigned to assist them on construction and maintenance projects. Work assignments are normally received from a foreman or other administrative superior and after instructions have been given work is generally performed without direct supervision. Work is reviewed by a supervisor for conformance with instructions and for the safety and care exercised in operating equipment.
- Operates dump, flat bed, or other trucks in picking up and delivering materials, debris and supplies; services vehicles with gas, oil and water and performs minor maintenance work; notifies superior and mechanics of need for major repair.
- Operates trucks on road maintenance and street construction work hauling cold patch, gravel sand, and rock; operates compressors pneumatic tools, small-power rollers and related pieces of equipment; participates in semi-skilled tasks in street patching and crack filling operations.
- Plows snow, hauls snow and spreads salt in winter; may operate a tractor cutting grass and weeds in summer.
- Performs various manual labor tasks such as cleaning catch basins and street gutters; digging ditches and laying pipe; maintains park areas; Knows grass and trims tree limbs.
- Performs related work as required.
Must be available to report for emergency operations, especially in the winter.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy duty trucks. Must be physically able to perform the required tasks. HS Diploma or GED, knowledge of the operation and servicing of heavy duty trucks, OR any equivalent education and experience that demonstrated the possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL-B) required.
