Install and perform maintenance on wiring, control, and lighting systems. Electricians work on electrical components for buildings that are finished, and no longer under construction. They are competent at reading blueprints and technical diagrams, understand and follow the regulations set out in the government’s National Electric Code, and use a range of equipment to test for and identify electrical problems. When they discover an issue, electricians repair or replace the affected wiring or device.
There are two main categories of electricians. Inside electricians work on larger motors, equipment, and systems in business buildings and factories. Residential electricians, by contrast, work in residential homes. These personnel install wiring and troubleshoot non-industrial fixtures and equipment.
