Plans the job, determines methods and sequence of operations, makes layouts, fabricates, assembles and proves complex tools and dies such as tool masters, master tooling gauges, deep draw, multiple, cam action and compound dies and constructs all types of sizes of major jigs, fixtures, tool masters, master tooling gauges and related tooling, where critical reference points, surfaces, locators and tooling holes must be established and coordinated among three or more nonparallel planes or two or more radial profiles, and it is required to exercise a complete knowledge of jig and fixture building, tool and die making, and machine shop theory and practice, including the principles and use of applicable optical equipment; prepares the breakdown of all types and sizes of major jigs and fixtures, tool masters or master tooling gauges into components, details and accessories as required for the construction of these tools by other employees; determines the methods and sequences of fabrication and assembly, and coordinates the work of such employees; performs the final setup and assembly of components, details and accessories and follows such tools through to completion and sell-off.

May develop, fabricate, and prove optical and mechanical accessories for the purpose of adapting and modifying optical instruments and similar equipment used in building and checking major tooling.

Performs modification and rework of the level of difficulty of the operations described above.

PERFORMS SUCH RELATED DUTIES AS:

Fabricates tools without benefit of tool designs, working to standard tool manufacturing practice and procedure.

Works to exacting tolerances.

Makes layouts or sketches and writes detail orders for machining, welding processing and other operations as required.
Supplies lacking design details, and/or suggests changes in design or in material, pertinent to functional practicability, ease, or economy of manufacture.

Improvises shop aids to facilitate work assignments.

Makes setups for plastic jig facings, and performs finish grinding, trimming, etc., as required.

Makes tools and dies without the aid of tool designs, working to standard tool manufacturing practices and procedures.

Sets up and operates power machine tools and accessories as required for the machining of tools and dies.

***Must be able to work any shift****Must demonstrate a complete understanding of the principles and use of applicable optical equipment such computer aided measuring equipment such as laser trackers.

*Must possess a minimum of four years of experience working in tool and die or jig and fixture building, form block and/or template making or equivalent.
