Job Description:
Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by operating and maintaining central heating plant/ biomass systems and equipment, while working the third shift.
This is a 40 hour per week and 52 weeks per year 1.0 FTE position.
Salary: $18.76/hour or more depending on experience.
Essential Functions
- Operates boilers and auxiliary equipment for generation of 25 psi to 125 psi steam.
- Operates steam-driven turbines and auxiliary equipment for 480 volt, 3 phase, and power generation.
- Collects plant process data and logs throughout shift.
- Performs maintenance on equipment as required.
- Performs standard tests on water and steam condensate and chemically treats as needed.
- Follows procedures and safety rules as required. Implements lockout/tag-out and confined entry policies to comply with O.S.H.A.
- Performs other heating plant related responsibilities as necessary.
- May cross-train in other mechanical/electrical trade shops and support other Facilities Services department needs.
- Receives # 2 oil and wood chip deliveries at heating plant.
- Fills in for heating plant supervisor as needed, including taking 'on-call' pager.
- Reads gauges and thermometers and climb ladders.
- Shovels snow during winter season.

- Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups or other designated bodies as assigned.
- Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
- Speaks, reads and writes in English.
- Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements:
- Working experience in boiler operation for 25 to 125 psi steam and turbine generator operation is preferred.
- Drivers license required
- Must know spill prevention, control, and countermeasure process for heating plant. Must have thorough understanding of combustion control systems.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook)
- Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 80 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus
- Work third shift and cover weekend hours, as per schedule.
Environmental Conditions
- Indoor work in a heating plant
- High level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
