The Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and developing thermal protection systems, primarily for aerospace applications, using multilayer insulation blankets. This involves selecting appropriate materials, creating designs, and ensuring the fabrication process meets required specifications.

The Design Engineer will also be responsible for designing and optimizing composite parts, including the cutting and assembly of layers. This would involve using CAD software to create 3D models, selecting appropriate materials and manufacturing processes, and ensuring parts meet specific dimensional and performance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine MLI blanket designs, including material selection, layer configurations, and attachment methods.
  • Creating and optimizing 3D models of composite parts using CAD software, considering factors like layup sequence, material properties, and manufacturing processes.
  • Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD , SolidWorks , CREO ).
  • Design efficient and accurate cutting patterns for plies, considering factors like waste reduction, material handling, and automation possibilities.
  • Work closely with Applications Engineer / Process Engineer to ensure MLI blankets are manufactured according to design specifications.
  • Prepare technical documentation including, but not limited to assembly drawings, layouts, bills of material, engineering specifications, schematic diagrams, production aids, work instructions, etc.
  • Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure the procurement of necessary materials.
  • Continuous Improvement - Identify opportunities to optimize MLI designs and fabrication processes.
  • Staying up to date with industry standards, new technologies, and best practices for composite & MLI manufacturing.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to other engineering staff in respect to above duties
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (e.g., mechanical, aerospace, thermal engineering) or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design and creation of Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) and composites manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of thermal physics, heat transfer, and materials science.
  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to write and present well. Ability to write documents in a clear, concise manner with excellent grammar, spelling, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CREO) and thermal analysis tools
  • Knowledge of aerospace standards and regulations (e.g., AS9100, ISO).
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
Additional Preferred Requirements
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience at a contract manufacturing organization a strong plus
  • Excellent teamwork skills, both as a leader and participant.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach others.
