Crane Operator Job Description As a Crane Operator, you will begin with a comprehensive training program, shadowing experienced trainers and engaging in general warehouse clean-up tasks. You will learn color codes for steel, its placement in the warehouse, and crane operation based on previous experience. This role requires physical stamina to walk for 8-10 hour shifts, covering approximately 8 miles daily, both indoors and outdoors. Exposure to the elements is expected, and you will operate both indoor and outdoor cranes while performing housekeeping duties associated with the role. Responsibilities Train and shadow experienced operators to learn crane operation and warehouse procedures. Understand and apply color codes for steel and ensure proper placement in the warehouse. Operate cranes to pull beams, load flatbed trailers, and railcars, including rigging and climbing onto flatbeds. Receive inventory, move materials using an overhead crane, and complete shipping reports and bills of lading. Adhere to safety rules and regulations while working around flatbed trucks and railcar systems. Potentially train to become a saw or brake operator, with promotional opportunities to become a forklift operator. Essential Skills Heavy industrial or construction experience is required. Ability to read a tape measure, verified through testing or reference. Ability to see and memorize color codes and inventory systems. Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks involving reaching, stooping, and squatting. Experience operating equipment effectively and safely, having worked around heavy equipment in construction or similar fields. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience with overhead crane operation in heavy industry or military settings is preferred. Work Environment This role involves working both inside and outside across various warehouse settings, with steel stored in the building and separate yards onsite. Expect extreme temperatures, from hot summers to cold winters, given the steel surroundings. The work environment resembles a construction site, requiring hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and safety vests. The facility primarily has gravel flooring, presenting uneven surfaces similar to construction sites. This is a third shift position. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Petersburg, Virginia. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
