Building Inspector Pay
Begins at $57,304.73 and is based on applicable experience.

Building Inspector TRAINEE Pay
If you do not currently have the required certifications, you will be hired as a TRAINEE earning $52,881.38 until your certifications have been completed according to the time expectations detailed below.

In addition to the base salary, this full-time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus as well as a longevity bonus.

Description:

Under the direction of the Building Official, this position is responsible for technical and administrative work of considerable difficulty while conducting commercial, residential, and zoning inspections for code compliance and life safety, and performs related work as required. Duties may include but are not limited to, meeting with builders, contractors, owners, and other professionals inspecting a variety of construction work and providing guidance regarding code compliance.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Reviews and interprets architectural and engineering plans to ensure building and life safety code compliance, applying knowledge to related systems to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.

  • Review plans of existing structures for change of use or occupancy for compliance with building and life safety codes.

  • Inspects new and existing commercial, industrial, residential and other buildings and structures for conformance with building and life safety codes from inception to completion of the project..

  • Coordinates inspection activities with other professionals, owners, site personnel, or other inspectors.

  • Answers questions in the office and field regarding code compliance

  • Attends board meetings (i.e. Construction Board of Appeals) as needed.

  • Maintains comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of laws and regulations pertaining to building codes, inspection activities, and changes in municipal codes or ordinances.

  • Maintains certification and/or professional affiliations, attends classes, workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

  • Maintains and researches current and new building techniques and applies knowledge of current code cycle to confirm compliance with standard building practices.

  • Works safely observing all OSHA, Federal, State, and Town regulations. Report any incidents/accidents immediately to the supervisor.

  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehciles, reporting any malfunctioning equipment to the Building Official.

  • Operates equipment and vehicles safely and lawfully, observing all rules/regulations of traffic safety.

  • Conducts behavior at all times in a professional manner to reflect positively on customers perception of the town facility.

  • Provides coverage in the absence of other personnel, and promotes the teamwork environment.

  • Any other duties as assigned by the Building Official.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a state issued drivers license
  • Must have a High School diploma or GED supplemented
  • Must have Two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving building inspection.
  • Or Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must be able to correctly wear appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
  • Must have certification from the State of Tennessee (Fire Prevention Division) as a Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, and Plumbing Inspector or if not currently certified from the State of Tennessee, must be able to earn a valid Residential Building Inspector certification from the International Code Council within 3 months of hire, a valid Residential Plumbing or Residential Mechanical Inspector certification from the International Code Council within 6 months of hire with the remaining certification earned within one year of appointment.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to evaluate, audit, deduce, and/or access data using established construction and code criteria. Includes exercising discretion in determining actual or probable consequences and in referencing such evaluation to identify and select alternatives.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations. Must be able to exhibit excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and the general public.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, various office machines to include a personal computer with Microsoft Office, telephone, cell phone, copier, printer and fax. Must be able to operate a vehicle and two-way radio.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory, and/or design data and information to communicate verbally and in writing.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages, may include ratio and proportion, wind load, BTU, and energy efficiency, may include the ability to calculate surface area volumes, weights, and measures.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of construction and building techniques and code enforcement; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. Must be able to perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not consistent physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Working conditions are such that minor cuts, abrasions, bruises or burns may be experienced. Must be able to enter and exit a vehicle frequently. May be required to enter confined spaces. Must be able to climb ladders and stairs frequently.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, electric currents, noise, traffic hazards, or bright/dim light. May come in contact with animals such as rodents, snakes, dogs, etc.
