Construction Superintendent - WWTP

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead and manage all field operations of assigned projects including, but not limited to, supervising foremen, managing subcontractors and vendors, quality control, safety management, equipment utilization and coordinating with other superintendents for the best utilization of PSCC resources.
  • Review, manage and execute all contract documents, and directives received from the project manager. Communicate regularly and effectively with the project manager.
  • Be knowledgeable of all contract documents and their relationship to the project. (Plans, specifications, contract, schedules, budget, subcontracts, purchase orders, etc.) Know what resources are included in the project budget and manage accordingly.
  • Provide input regarding the overall project schedule. Maintain the project schedule.
  • Maintain accurate and hard short term schedules. Update schedules each week and distribute to project manager, president, foremen, equipment manager, safety director, and applicable subcontractors. (Hard means all activities on the short-term schedule are locked in not just written on the schedule. I.E., subcontractors are aware of start and completion dates, surveyors are scheduled, materials are ordered, foremen know the schedule, etc.) Proactively manage the schedule. Run your project, DO NOT let it run you.
  • Know the Petticoat-Schmitt safety rules and all O.S.H.A. rules. Maintain safety compliance on all projects. You are the safety manager. Lead others and hold the jobsite foreman accountable. Safety is always first. Plan for safety always.
  • Always do Job Briefings and ensure that foremen are doing Job Briefings.
  • Ensure that all project documentation is timely and accurate (billing, change orders, time sheets, vacation requests, production reports, daily reports, short term schedules, force account info, locates, Environmental reports, near-miss reports, accident reports., etc.)
  • Maintain the quality of the work performed by PSCC forces and subcontractors at all times. Evaluate crews and subs and double check as necessary.
  • Keep a clean and organized worksite. Hold crews and subs to strict standards.
  • Keep trash to a minimum. Designate parking areas and keep equipment organized.
  • Aim for zero punch-list projects. Punch-out the work as you go.
  • Keep jobsite environmentally compliant. (NPDES reports, erosion control, dewatering discharge, MSDS, contaminated material spill protection, sewage exposure, etc.)
  • Work with the Equipment Manager regarding equipment maintenance schedule and mechanical needs. Work together to minimize downtime and maintain the integrity of the equipment fleet. Do not tolerate abuse or neglect of equipment by PSCC employees.
  • Evaluate and dictate employee performance according to PSCC standards. Assist in evaluating, hiring, and firing of PSCC employees that are subordinate to you.
  • Provide leadership, motivation and mentoring to your subordinates. Be a team leader.
  • Maintain current training in all applicable industry education. (Competent person, confined space, O.S.H.A. 10-hour, CPR/First Aid, NPDES inspection, Training, Leadership for Crew Leaders, and any other PSCC training.)
  • Provide positive client relations as well as maintaining the company and industry image. Maintain a good attitude when representing Petticoat-Schmitt in public.
  • Maintain the Petticoat-Schmitt Code of Conduct.
  • Participate in a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education each calendar year.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Functions

Technical Knowledge:

  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to measure, perform construction math and calculate quantities.
  • Can set up and properly use a rotary laser, builders level, and total station.
  • PSCC and OSHA safety rules
  • NPDES standards, rules, and best management practices (BMPs)
  • Basic IT skills, can navigate smart phone and iPad to fill forms and reports
  • Read and interpret plans, include I&C and electrical one-line diagrams.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand or sit for long periods; handle and manipulate controls on a repetitive basis. Ability to see well and distinguish between back up alarms, voices, and other normal sounds consistent with construction job sites. Ability to climb in and out of equipment, ability to lift 40 lbs.

Environmental Adaptability:

Work outside in all weather conditions, and various locations and times of day. Hard hat, hearing and eye protection, Hi-visibility clothing required.

Training and Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience building water / wastewater treatment plants and lift/pump stations
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Competent Person training
  • Confined space training
  • Crane safety and rigging
  • Fall protection
  • NPDES/Erosion Control training
  • Math
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivated
