The Heavy Construction Equipment Operator in the Stormwater Division is responsible for the skilled operation of heavy machinery used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of stormwater infrastructure. This position is critical in supporting the city's flood control efforts by ensuring proper drainage and stormwater flow through safely and effectively handling equipment such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, and dump trucks. The operator is expected to follow safety protocols, perform routine equipment inspections, and work collaboratively with stormwater crews to maintain the integrity of the city's stormwater management systems.
- Operates and maintains heavy motorized construction equipment.
- Transports heavy construction equipment to job sites.
- Inspects equipment before use to ensure necessary repairs are made.
- Inspects job sites for possible hazards.
- Ensures proper equipment maintenance; performs minor repairs as necessary.
- Operates roll-off container truck to support the transfer station as needed.
- Monitors landfill operations and reports problems to management staff.
- Assists in the maintenance, repair, and clean-up of rights-of-way, streets, sidewalks, and guardrails; enforces safe work practices.
- Assists supervisor and crew chief in the scheduling and documentation of work; completes daily work reports; ensures that operators complete daily vehicle and equipment inspection reports.
- Sets up traffic control devices around work sites.
- Operates radio in accordance with proper radio protocol.
- Repairs or replaces underground sewer pipes, manhole rings and tops, and repairs erosion problems.
- Performs tests of Manhole High Level Alarm Systems, which are installed throughout the system.
- Responds to emergency situations during and after normal work hours.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED, with three years (3) of heavy construction equipment operation and maintenance, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver's license (class A) with an acceptable driving history.
Additional Requirements
Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen, and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.
