The Superintendent oversees the operations of a construction site, from planning to completion. The duties listed below can vary, however, they can expect to be responsible for daily scheduling, supervising all activities and tasks, and ensuring the safety and compliance of the site. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with ability to manage complex schedules and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Safety
- Take a proactive role in project safety performance.
- Monitor, identify, and correct project related safety issues.
- Foster corporate safety objectives and core values at the project level.
- Conduct daily safety meetings.
- Assure that Pre-Task Plans are being thoroughly and correctly implemented by crews.
- Work with Site Safety Representative to develop and maintain project-specific Safety and Health Plans, including risk management for High Hazard Tasks (HHT) and High-Risk Work (HRW), and obtain Buyer acceptance before work begins.
Job Start Up
- Attend and participate in Project Handover Meeting.
- Schedule/Lead Shop Equipment Meeting.
- Schedule/Lead Safety Meeting.
- Review and Understand Contract Plans, Specifications, Pay Items, Contractual Completion/Milestone Dates and Liquidated Damage Amounts.
- Review and understand anticipated under/over runs in quantities.
- Review and understand Project Budget.
- Generate Job Concept and Construction Scheme.
- Work with PM to establish work plans and target production rates to match actual planned work hours and crew size vs. estimated production rates and crew size - Estimate is the minimum - Beat it!
- Select the Proper Plant/Equipment and Generate detailed equipment list and schedule and provide to shop.
- Generate manpower requirements and schedule and provide to OPS.
- Work with PM and Scheduler to develop CPM Schedule.
- Set up offices for Contractor and Owner (if required) at project locations.
- Locate and set up waste areas and yards - Acquire Private Property Release and/or Act 250 Permit/Waiver.
- Assure Project Site TOPO and Survey Control is established.
- Assure Project Signs and Notices are in place at site trailer/yard.
- Assure that proper Safety PPE is readily available at the site.
- Assure that small tools and equipment are readily available at the site.
- Assure that Site Specific Safety Plan, SDS and Directions to Hospital are available at site.
- If union craft workers will be utilized, review and understand applicable union agreements.
Project Execution
- Foster and set the example for Teamwork within the company and on the project.
- Generate and Distribute Play of the Day to outline daily work tasks for Foreman and Crews - Communicate Daily Work Plan and Production Targets with Foremen and Crews.
- Solicit Foremen for ideas to improve production and implement them as part of the planning process.
- Sign up new employees and orient them with jobsite and company expectations.
- Provide specific direction and training to field craft workers. Train and develop the crews.
- Generate and Maintain a Look-ahead Schedule on a weekly basis and publish as required. Involve Forman in this task and assure that the look-ahead schedule is in line with the Project CPM Schedule.
- Maintain and forecast a (4) week look ahead to assure labor, materials and equipment are ordered in time to assure that production is not delayed.
- Assist PM in providing actual start and finish dates for CPM activities to Scheduler for project CPM updates.
- Communicate equipment and manpower needs weekly.
- Assure that equipment is properly maintained while on site, including PM services, grease, and general cleaning.
- Document equipment condition upon arrival and departure from site.
- Provide equipment hours to shop on a weekly basis.
- Minimize outside rentals wherever and whenever possible.
- Assure proper equipment utilization on site and assure that equipment hours are claimed/tracked daily.
- Assure that craft are not abusing or mis-using equipment/tools/supplies.
- Schedule equipment moves with shop and provide proper notice for such.
- Provide Small Tool requests to shop and provide proper notice for such.
- Assure that field logs are turned in daily - No Excuses.
- Assure that field logs are accurate and descriptive. Provide/request training if needed.
- Assure that quantities are tracked and claimed daily for all work in place.
- Assure that equipment hours are reported on time sheets for ALL equipment on site.
- Review and agree on quantities on a regular basis with Owner/Owner's rep.
- Keep notes on over or under payment on quantities and advise PM of any issues.
- Assure that Time & Material forms are filled out daily and signed by Owner for any disputed or force account work.
- Work with PM to assure that timely contractual notice is provided to the Owner for any additional or disputed work.
- Work with PM and Owner's rep to assure that pay applications are processed timely and that we are being paid for ALL work that we perform.
- Work with Subcontractors to develop schedules and monitor their work and progress.
- Assure that Subcontractors are performing to our standards (Quality and Safety).
- Schedule subs well in advance to assure that production is not delayed.
- Verify subcontractor work in place with PM.
- Schedule subs, materials, and trucking to assure no delays to production.
- Assure that PM is aware of any issues that may adversely affect the project completion date or budget.
- Maintain daily, open communication with Owner site representative(s).
- Maintain daily, open communication with PM.
- Ensure all backup is coded and sent to main office weekly.
- Be aware of job cost, real time!
- Work with PM to assure that cost projections are timely and accurate, and project financial information is accurately portrayed to senior management.
- Assure that a high-quality work product is being put in place and accepted by the Owner.
- Maintain positive working relationships with engineers, clients, and local affected residents/businesses.
- Set a positive example for the crews and protect and foster the company's reputation with the Owner and the public - Be a Leader!
- Coordinate with the Buyer's Subcontract Technical Representative (STR) daily, using Work Release Forms to define work scope and limits.
- Manage Subcontractor System Turnover (SST) for Buyer-owned systems, ensuring proper documentation and handover.
- Maintain a 4-week look-ahead schedule, aligning with the Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule, and forecast labor, material, and equipment needs.
- Track and report daily quantities, equipment hours, and field logs, ensuring accuracy and timely submission to the Buyer.
- Supervise subcontractors, verifying work quality, safety compliance, and schedule adherence, and schedule subcontractors in advance to prevent delays.
- Ensure all personnel complete Buyer-provided site orientation and annual refresher training (~2 hours) on safety, radiological, and site protocols.
- Train crews on site-specific JHAs, radiological controls, and high-hazard procedures, maintaining training records for Buyer review.
Job Closeout
- Ensure as-builts are completed, if required.
- Complete and document project punch list.
Business Development
- Identify potential opportunities for the Company.
- Maintain frequent communication with prior clients and peers regarding potential opportunities.
- Recruit potential craft workers, Foremen and Supers for the Company.
- Train your replacement.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering/construction management preferred
- A minimum of 7 years' experience in a bridge/heavy highway construction field required
- A minimum of 3-5 years' supervisory experience
- Ability to adapt to and learn a variety of computer applications
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Great interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others and as a team
- Must have proficient knowledge with NYSDOT standard specification as it relates to construction
- Ability to interpret blueprints and analyze job costs
- Able to complete required duties in a fast-paced environment and within stated deadlines
- Must be willing to travel
- Must have a valid driver's license or reliable transportation to report to work on time
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
Compensation:

Superintendent I $86,000-$89,000
Superintendent II $114,000-$122,000
Superintendent III $118,000-$148,000
General Superintendent $131,000-$160,000
Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as related work experience, market conditions, education/training, certifications and other credentials, overtime when applicable, as well as applicable knowledge and skills.
