As a member of our Roads & Utilities Group in the Engineering, Design and Project Management Division for Central Canada, you will be working in a fast-paced team-oriented environment. As a Utility Design Engineer, in addition to the utilities design, you will have exposure to road, structural, traffic, railway, environmental, geotechnical, foundations, geomatics, and electrical design during the course of our design assignments. You will be overseeing and managing delivery of projects related to underground utilities from conception to detailed design, tendering and construction.

Our Municipal engineering team is looking for a Utility Design Engineer to join our growing team on a major transit rail program.

Your role within the team:

To perform this role successfully, the individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Develop detailed engineering designs, drawings and analysis for the underground utility systems such as domestic and firewater water supply, sanitary and storm sewage systems from preliminary concepts, specifications, bid documents, engineering directives, and other data, according to client specifications for the projects.
  • Prepare calculations, technical reports, Utility Conflict Plans and Composite Utility Plans, profiles and cross-sections for the contract packages in collaboration with multi-discipline teams, Utility Companies, and construction staff.
  • Lead the design packages delivery ensuring QA/QC, compliance, and managing project resources, budgets and timelines.
  • Analyze and interpret information from utility records, subsurface utility engineering (SUE) reports, as-builts, and surveys and prepare plans for relocation, protection and necessary upgrade of the utility infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with provincial, municipal and regulatory standards, permits/approvals requirements, Municipal Clearance Requirements (MCR) and PUCC processes.
  • Support project managers with proposal writing, business development, and client-based support.
  • Communication and stakeholder management including making presentations to the clients, authorities, and management to present designs, proposals, and address their needs and concerns.

The ideal candidate:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or Water Resource Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Licensed Ontario Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligible within 12 months.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated related experience in civil and wet utility engineering design including hydraulic analysis, 3D modeling using Civil3D or similar software, detailed engineering, drawings, cost estimate, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Strong familiarity with utility, civil, rail, transportation and drainage design standards and guidelines in Ontario and familiarity with municipal and provincial clients and approving agencies.
  • Experience conducting utility infrastructure inspections would be an asset.
  • Experience in preparing design calculations, hydrology, hydraulic designs, technical reports and documentation for the utility and stormwater drainage works.
  • Prior experience of working on Transit Rail projects would be an asset.
