Job Summary
Inspects residential and commercial buildings to verify compliance with all building, safety, and construction codes and regulations.
Job Responsibilities
Reviews construction plans for compliance with applicable building code and prepares building, plumbing mechanical and electrical permits for issuance.
Reviews permit applications and associated documents to complete the forms necessary for the issuance of the permit.
Prepares deficiency letters to provide review results to the permit applicants when issues need to be addressed to complete the application process.
Equitably enforces building and safety codes and regulations.
Coordinates the resolution of complaints and technical questions; provides assistance to clients on methods to meet County requirements.
Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
This position follows a sequence:
Level I:
5 year's building trades and/or inspection experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Building Inspector and/or Plans Examiner certifications are required within 6 months of hire date.
Electrical Plans Examiners/Inspectors will be required to possess a Colorado Master Electrician's License or a minimum five (5) years' experience as a Journeyman.
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
Level II (in addition to Level I):
In addition to Level I, 1 additional year (6 total) experience as plans examiner and/or inspector.
Building Inspector and/or Plans Examiner certifications required.
Level III (in addition to Level II):
In addition to Level II, 1 additional year (7 total) experience as plans examiner and/or inspector.
Building Inspector and/or Plans Examiner certifications and one additional ICC Certification.
Knowledge Of:
County policies and procedures.
State and federal laws and regulations governing work performed.
Record keeping and records management rules and standards.
Skill In:
Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations.
Interacting with people of different social, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and other regional emergency services agencies.
Utilizing standard personal computer software programs and specialized state and County software.
Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment, with frequent visits to building sites.
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position satisfactorily and, if requested, reasonable accommodations will be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions of their job, absent undue hardship. The employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
