The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven is a DOE-funded national scientific user facility, offering users a supported research experience with top-caliber scientists and access to state-of-the- art instrumentation. The CFN mission is advancing nanoscience through frontier fundamental research and technique development and is the nexus of a broad collaboration network. Each year, CFN staff members support the research of nearly 600 external facility users.

The Center for Functional Nanomaterials is seeking an Operations Electro-Mechanical Technician to support our scientific user facility. In this position, you will report to the Operations Group Leader and be part of the CFN Operations Team. You will interact with scientific staff, vendors, and users. You are responsible for providing electrical and mechanical support for the setup, debug, and maintenance of technical - scientific instruments (e.g. electron microscopes, lasers, pressurized gas systems, chillers, vacuum, and deposition tools). You will have experience in the following areas: electrical systems, plumbing systems, compressed gases, materials handling, assembly of experimental equipment, ordering both onsite and offsite materials, working independently and collaborating as part of a team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of non-routine technical tasks related to the fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of complex scientific equipment within a world-class research facility.

  • Design, procure, and fabricate specialized fixtures and components to support experimental tools and scientific operations.

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with scientific staff, external users, vendors, and contractors.

  • Train to become a certified Work Control Coordinator (WCC); oversee vendor activities and develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for various work activities.

  • Work as part of a collaborative team, applying analytical thinking to develop straightforward solutions to complex technical challenges while adhering to established procedures and safety protocols.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are qualified for this role if:

  • You have earned a high school diploma (or equivalent) plus

    • a BS degree in a technical field + 2 years relevant work experience or;

    • a degree from a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL + 6 years relevant experience or;

    • a technical high school certification program (e.g. BOCES) + 7 years relevant work experience or;

    • 8 years relevant work experience.

  • You are mechanically inclined, with proven mechanical skills, and have a strong electrical knowledge and background.

  • Relevant experience should include the following: experience in maintenance, installation, repair and/or upgrading electrical, mechanical, and/or pressurized systems.

  • You have computer skills inclusive of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

  • You are committed to fostering an environment of safe work practices.

Preferred background and experience:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    -a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years relevant work experience or;
    - a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years relevant experience or;
    - a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
    - 10 years relevant work experience.

  • You have experience in installing complex scientific equipment, procuring parts, fabricating experimental apparatuses to specification, and supporting equipment.

  • You have machine shop tooling experience and the ability to make a part to a designed specification with a mill or lathe using CAD drawings.

  • You have experience rebuilding vacuum pumps and assembling vacuum systems and components.

  • You have experience working at BNL.

Other:

  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL.

  • This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $76100 - $104000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
