Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Trades Section Chief, Bureau of Building Management, this position is primarily responsible for applying steam fitting fundamentals to the repair, troubleshooting, installation and preventive maintenance of mechanical heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems/equipment for assigned facilities.

This position will perform systems troubleshooting, preventative maintenance and repairs on HVAC/Refrigeration equipment including but not limited to steam traps, boilers, air handlers, VAV boxes, exhaust fans, humidification systems, circulating pumps, air and water filtration systems, pneumatic, electric and Direct Digital (DDC) temperature controls, static pressure controls, temperature control air compressors and refrigerated air driers, air cooled or water-cooled condensers and evaporative cooling towers.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule range (04-00) and is represented by the Wisconsin State Building Trades bargaining unit. Rate of pay will be between $53.77 and $55.53 and is determined based on adjusted leave time selected by the employee. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Job Details

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will meet at least one of the following:

  • Completion of an apprenticeship approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a steamfitter/possession of a current Journey level Steamfitter Certification
  • Formal recognition of status by the appropriate international or local trade organization or some type of similar formal validation of journey status
  • Applicants having training and experience equivalent to the formal apprenticeship and journey-level status may also be accepted upon submission of documented proof of such training and experience.
  • Equivalent training and experience includes 8,000 hours of training and experience in all of the following work processes: (1) installation of residential and apartment heating systems; (2) installation of industrial and commercial heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems; (3) installation and repair of power house systems; (4) repair and servicing of all types of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems; (5) installation and final testing of all types of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; (6) installation and final adjustment of temperature controls; and (7) completion of 500 hours of prescribed instruction. Such evidence may include letters or statements from past customers/clients and/or employers.

NOTE: Documentation that the candidate meets the minimum qualification will be verified prior to an offer of employment being made.

Qualified applicants will have the following:

1.Training or experience with the tools, equipment, materials, and practices of the steamfitting trade (e.g. drills, saws, welding torches, wrenches, or similar)

  1. Steamfitter experience (e.g. install and maintain pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial production and processing systems.

  2. In-depth knowledge of service and troubleshooting for complex HVAC systems, including pumps and piping.

In addition, well qualified applicants may also have experience in:

  1. Preventative maintenance on HVAC systems (e.g. boilers, chillers, pipe systems, or similar)

  2. Environmental Protection Agency 608 certification

  3. Experience with Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems, performance monitoring, alarms, point adjustments, program changes in response to customer complaints or system malfunctions.
