HDD Drill Operator

Specialized Communication Services, LLC is seeking an experienced and reliable Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Drill Operator to join our field crew in the St. George area. You will be responsible for operating directional drilling rigs to install underground utilities and communication lines across southern Utah. This role requires high technical skill, physical stamina to work in hot desert climates, and the ability to work full-time plus consistent overtime.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate HDD drill rigs (e.g., Vermeer, Ditch Witch) safely and efficiently to install conduits and pipes.
• Read and interpret blueprints , utility maps, and bore paths to avoid existing underground infrastructure.
• Coordinate closely with the locator/tracker to guide the drill head accurately along the designated path.
• Perform daily safety inspections and routine maintenance on drilling equipment and fluid mixing systems.
• Operate company vehicles and transport drill rigs or support equipment safely to local job sites.
• Set up traffic control using signs, cones, and flags to secure desert jobsites.
• Maintain a clean site and assist the field crew with general labor tasks when not drilling.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Proven experience operating HDD drill rigs in utility construction.
• Strong understanding of bore plans , tracking systems (e.g., DigiTrak), and drilling fluids/mud mixing.
• Availability for full-time schedule plus regular overtime hours.
• Valid Drivers License with a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) required.
• CDL (Commercial Driver's License) is highly preferred.
• Heat tolerance to work outdoors in Southern Utah summer temperatures.
• Physical strength to repeatedly lift 5075 lbs and stand for long shifts.
• Pass a drug screen and standard background check.
• Blue Stakes knowledge and utility locating experience are highly preferred.
