Job Description
As our Construction Accountant, you’ll be the financial backbone of our operations, managing all aspects of accounting for our commercial retail construction projects. From budgeting and project accounting to monthly close-outs and compliance, you’ll wear multiple hats, acting as both accountant and controller. You’ll ensure our books are accurate, our projects are profitable, and our company is fully compliant, all while supporting our growth as a general contractor.
Responsibilities
- Manage general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial statements.
- Develop and monitor company and project budgets to optimize profitability.
- Prepare monthly financial reports, reconcile accounts, and close out prior months.
- Clean up historical financial records to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date books using construction accounting software.
- Act as a controller, implementing internal controls and providing strategic financial insights.
- Handle project accounting, including job costing, AIA progress billing, and tracking project budgets.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and construction-specific requirements (e.g., certified payroll, prevailing wage).
- Collaborate with project managers and leadership to support financial decision-making.
Requirements
- Experience: 3-5 years in construction accounting, with expertise in job costing, AIA billing, or project accounting.
- Skills: Proficiency in QuickBooks; strong Excel skills for budgeting and reporting; knowledge of construction financial practices (e.g., retainage, change orders).
- Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (preferred); CPA or CMA is a plus. Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check.
- Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities, and occasional travel to project sites.
- Language: Fluency in English; Spanish is a plus.
