About this Job
The overall function of this position is to assist the Engineer 7 and the Engineer 6 with managing the District's Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Program. This includes the operation, planning, inspection, maintenance, and repair of fixed and movable bridges and dam structures to ensure a safe and cost effective maintenance program in accordance with maintenance system standards, budget policy, and procedures. This position is located in District 58, Unit 051 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Engineer 6.
Minimum Qualifications
Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
NOTE:
Engineer Intern Applicant is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.
Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificates are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.
Required certification for applicants interested in qualifying for Engineer Intern 1 or 2: Engineer Intern Certificate in the state of Louisiana.
Required License for applicants interested in qualifying for Engineer 3, 4, or 5: Professional Engineer License in the state of Louisiana.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Assist with the daily operations of the District's Bridge Inspection Program and provide functional supervision over the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance and Bridge Electrician's gangs. Check bridge inspection reports for accuracy and recommends bridge repair methods to Engineer 6. Designs retrofits for steel bridge members, temporary shoring, bridge deck repairs, bridge pile repairs, etc. Assist with the coordination of materials, equipment, labor, press releases, and traffic control plans for inspection and maintenance activities. Checks, verifies, and performs QC bridge inspection with Bridge Inspector 5 to ensure bridge inspectors are conducting detailed inspections. Compares inspection findings to as-built plans/conditions for on-system bridges. Conducts final acceptance and inventory/initial inspection of new bridges. Compiles and reviews relevant maintenance and inspection data to assess current bridge condition. Reviews load ratings, repair details, and inspection reports submitted by local bridge owners. Coordinates and assist the Bridge Electricians on movable bridge repairs
Assist the Engineer 6 with the District Guardrail Repair contract management, coordinates with the guardrail contractor for repairs/replacements, communicates with Maintenance Specialist to obtain pictures and detail of guardrail location, records location and magnitude of repair, and submits all necessary repair and cost documentation to collect-on reimbursable claims. Assist the Engineer 6 with overseeing facility projects performed by contractors and District personnel to ensure facility projects are completed on schedule and under budget. Drafts plans and facility sketches, provides cost estimates, determines building specification to meet building codes, and provides innovative engineering design and construction ideas for District facility projects.
Compiles information for request made by public and private agencies, officials, land owners, media, and department personnel regarding repair work, bridge and waterway closures, accidents, inspections, marine activities, and other bridge maintenance activities. Checks work performed by contractors and vendors.
Assists in the design of proposed bridge projects and stage O studies. Reviews and recommends changes to plans and specifications for upcoming bridge projects that are designed by others. Attend plan-in-hand meetings to discuss project design and development of plans and specifications on all types of bridge projects.
May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities. May be subpoenaed as requested by DOTD legal Counsel. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

The level at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate selected. This position provides the opportunity to advance within this job series.
Compensation:
For the Engineer Intern 1 - Engineer 5, these positions have a Special Entrance Rate (SER) starting salary of:
Engineer Intern 1 - $26.44 hourly / $2,115.20 bi-weekly
Engineer Intern 2 - $28.29 hourly / $2,263.20 bi-weekly
Engineer 3 - $33.39 hourly / $2,671.20 bi-weekly
Engineer 4 - $36.90 hourly / $2,952.00 bi-weekly
Engineer 5 - $39.48 hourly / $3,158.40 bi-weekly
