Heavy Equipment Operator- Landfill

Job Description

This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in support of the operations of the city landfill.

Examples of Duties

• Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including wheel loaders, motor graders, scrapers, tub grinders, compacter, screener, dump truck, snowplow and farm tractor.
• Maintains landfill roadways with motor grader-dozer.
• Assist the Roads & Streets Division with snow plowing of city streets.
• Monitors landfill for regulatory compliance, ground water depth, and methane gas monitoring.
• Places intermediate and final cover on trenches for site remediation and reclamation.
• Performs equipment maintenance; maintains maintenance records.
• Performs composting operations.
• Inspects loads for hazardous materials; direct customers to proper sites.
• Provides customer service.
• Assists with household hazardous waste operations as needed.
• Collects solid waste and yard debris and transports to landfill as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
